One measure was the introduction of all seater stadiums replacing the standing areas that were known as terraces. In 1994 all seater stadiums were made compulsory in English football. This did not go down well with those fans that had stood to watch their team for many years. Football grounds have a unique atmosphere that is not found in other sporting venues. Supporters will sing songs and chants as loudly as they can in an attempt to encourage their team and spur them on to better performance and results. The main criticism regarding the introduction of all seater stadiums are the effect they have on the atmosphere inside the ground. The football match was used as a meeting place for many groups of supporters. When fans stood on the terraces they were free to stand where they liked and could move around to different parts of the ground.
