One measure was the introduction of all seater stadiums replacing the standing areas that were known as terraces. In 1994 all seater stadiums were made compulsory in English football. This did not go down well with those fans that had stood to watch their team for many years. Football grounds have a unique atmosphere that is not found in other sporting venues. Supporters will sing songs and chants as loudly as they can in an attempt to encourage their team and spur them on to better performance and results.
