A Brief History of the Green Bay Packers Dating back to 1919, the Green Bay Packers have stood an icon in the small city of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Started by Curly Lambeau and George Calhoun, the Packers started as a small group of athletes. The Indian Packing Company, where Lambeau worked, agreed to back the team and provide uniforms and equipment. This was the inspiration for the name “Packers” and the team name has been the same ever since. The team played opponents from all around, including Washington and Michigan.
