Customer Review: Nicely built cleats
Although these are football cleats, and I do occasionally play flag football with them, I picked them up primarily for my primary sport of ultimate frisbee. As you’d expect from the pattern and mold, the studs work in most grass situations. The heel portion will clog in soft ground and the studs are a bit big if you play on turf a lot.
The upper has been solid and didn’t require much breaking in. The sides are supportive and, combined with the well wrapped foot cup in the sole, keep the foot in place. The padding is good, much better than the soccer cleats I’ve ordinarily worn, and the overall support is actually very good for a low-top shoe. I have pretty flat feet, so the understated arch support is perfect for me. If you’ve got bigger arches, you might want a brand like Nike, but you probably already know that. The plastic bottom is wider than most soccer cleat configurations and works very well for me, since my feet are wide too.
They are a bit heavy, especially considering the speed/receiver designation, but that’s to be expected — New Balance is known for heavy shoes. The weight is the trade-off for the padding, the support, the solidly wide bottoms, and the heavy duty material. Speaking of heavy duty, these aren’t the best breathing models I’ve ever owned, but not the worst either.
Sizing is comparable with other New Balance shoes (I just ran a marathon in NB runners last year).
Altogether, a good, solidly built pair of cleats for folks who have wider and/or flatter feet and want an all purpose solution that attempts to split the difference between speed and power. I’d definitely pick these up again.
